Posted by MEGAN VAN NOY on Jul 1 2022, 09:54 AM

What is TMJ?

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction or TMJ, is a condition that affects the jaw joint and associated muscles. If the joint is misaligned, it can cause symptoms such as facial pain, difficulty chewing or biting and even tinnitus (ringing in the ear).

Signs and Symptoms of TMJ

Some of the symptoms of TMJ disorder include:

- Jaw pain

- Limited jaw movement

- Clicking or popping sounds while chewing

- Difficulty opening or closing the mouth

- Headaches

What Causes TMJ?

TMJ can be caused by different factors. However, some of the most common causes are:

  • Injury to the jaw
  • Arthritis
  • Teeth grinding or clenching
  • Stress and
  • Environmental factors

Treatment options for TMJ

While there is no cure for TMJ, the condition can be managed and treated. It can be treated with non-surgical options. However, some cases may require surgery to relieve pressure on the joint. The best way to treat TMJ is to prevent its symptoms from appearing in the first place. You can do this by avoiding the behaviors that cause your TMJ to flare up, such as clenching and grinding your teeth. You can also practice relaxation techniques, such as meditation, yoga, or tai chi, to help ease tension and stress.

Dental care for TMJ sufferers

TMJ disorder patients need to follow a strict at-home dental care routine, even for patients who’ve already undergone TMJ disorder treatment. Regular checkups and cleanings are still very important for TMJ disorder patients, and it’s crucial that you continue to take care of yourself and follow the instructions as recommended by your dentist.

Conclusion

If you choose to ignore your TMJ problems, you risk damaging your jaw joints. While clenching and grinding are normal, you should still seek treatment if you experience these habits regularly and have trouble getting a good night’s sleep.
