Myofunctional therapy is the treatment method that involves using a single or a combination of physical therapy exercises to improve the patient's breathing, bite, and facial posture. This training is recommended for those with orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs) and targets the face, neck, and mouth's soft tissues to achieve optimal tongue position and oral rest posture. A study on Myofunctional therapy, titled "Myofunctional Therapy to Treat Obstructive Sleep Apnea: A Systemic Review and Meta-Analysis," affirms the efficacy of myofunctional therapy in treating conditions like ankyloglossia (tongue-tie). As per the study, a combination of myofunctional therapy, that strengthens the tongue, along with lingual frenectomy, a surgical procedure where the tissue that connects the underside of the tongue with the bottom of the mouth is removed, can be considered a safe and effective way to treat ankyloglossia.

Heard of orofacial myofunctional therapy? It is a type of dental treatment that is used to correct improper facial growth, poor muscle function, and poorly aligned teeth and involves training the facial muscles. If you wish to know more about the therapy, you are at the right place.

Megan Van Noy RDH, Myofunctional Therapist

Understanding Myofunctional Therapy?

Myofunctional therapy is based on a series of exercises that help patients learn to change bad habits. According to the Acadamy of Oral Myofunctional Therapy,

“Orofacial Myofunctional therapy is neurological re-education to assist the normalization of the developing, or developed, craniofacial structures and function. It is related to the study, research, prevention, evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of functional and structural alterations in the region of the mouth (oro), face (facial) and regions of the neck (oropharyngeal area).”

To the rest of us that means, a series of exercises to re-teach you how to chew, swallow, breathe, and stop bad oral habits (like finger sucking, lip licking, nail biting or cheek biting). When these things are done incorrectly they create negative pressure that changes the shape of the bone. They can alter sleeping and breathing. Just like physical therapy re-educates your muscles, and weight training makes your muscles stronger, myofunctional therapy re-educates your lips, tongue and oral muscles, and makes them stronger.

Myofunctional therapy improves tongue placement, breathing, speaking, chewing and swallowing, which can have a huge impact on their overall health and wellbeing.
